YouTube Beta-Launches New TV UI, Relaunches Mobile Service, Announces UGC Project with Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald

YouTube on Wednesday 1) beta-launched YouTube Leanback, a version of its service that is optimized for viewing on a TV screen (i.e. in "leanback" mode); 2) relaunched the browser-based mobile version (m.youtube.com) of its service; and 3) announced a user-generated content (UGC) collaboration with directors Ridley Scott and Kevin Macdonald that will invite users of its service (and other people around the world) to help create a documentary, entitled "Life in a Day."

New Version of metaio's Augmented Reality SDK Supports Image Recognition and Tracking on the iPhone

Munich-based augmented reality specialist, metaio, has launched a new version (2.1) of its Unifeye Mobile SDK that it says offers new features and functionality which take full advantage of the new iPhone OS 4.0 camera access API to enable the creation of image (vs GPS)-based augmented reality experiences on the iPhone. According to the company, Unifeye is currently the only SDK for creating mobile AR applications that support image processing (i.e. image recognition and tracking) on all major mobile platforms: iPhone, Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile.

Citing Higher Viewer Engagement on Android, MobiTV Announces Expansion to More Android Devices

--Company Says Android Users Watch 23% More Minutes per User than Users on Other Mobile OS's

Mobile TV specialist, MobiTV, which recently announced that the iPhone version of its live TV and VOD service has surpassed a million downloads since its launch in April (note: the company claims to have around 10 million subscribers), said Tuesday that it is expanding its service to more Android-based smartphones. The service is currently available on the Android-based Sprint EVO and HTC Hero devices, as well as on the AT&T Motorola Backflip: MobiTV says that its Android expansion will begin July 21st with the T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant.
