The Weather Channel launched a major upgrade for its app for the iPad, adding a 3D interactive globe with a spinning map view that allows users to track weather at various locations around the world.
The app, which was ranked Friday afternoon as the 12th most popular free app at Apple's iTunes Store, allows users to save up to 10 favorite locations. Users with an iPad 2 will see 3D background images on their home screen change to match local conditions. The app also contains a section with HD video submitted by users, in addition to video from programs on The Weather Channel.

Because the [itvt] editorial team is on the road this week, we are covering stories in this edition of the newsletter in round-up format:
The cable industry is getting more support for its Advanced Advertising Media Project (AAMP), which is focused on driving media buyers to video-on-demand advertising. AAMP said ABC, NBCUniversal, Intel, and cable marketing association CTAM joined its research initiative.
It announced several other members in March, including the A&E Television Networks, VOD technology firm BlackArrow, CBS, Comcast Corp., Digitas, Discovery Communications, Horizon Media, NDS and Rainbow Media.
Cable Interacts, an event led by Craig Leddy of Interactive TV Works and presented by CTAM NY, is taking place at the Time Warner Center (South Tower, 10th floor) in New York City 8:30AM-2:00PM today, Thursday, March 31st. Leddy is an excellent moderator and the event is sure to be worth attending. Tickets are priced at $149 (though CTAM NY members receive a special discounted rate of $99).

Since February 3rd, [itvt] Daily News has been on hiatus, while the [itvt] editorial team produced the TV of Tomorrow Show 2010--and then took a few days off to recover. This is the second of eight round-up articles, in which we are covering some of the more significant developments in the multiplatform/interactive TV space that took place during our hiatus:
The Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM) last week announced the results of a study of broadband video users and their viewing habits that it commissioned from The Nielsen Company. The report, entitled "Crossing Over: Understanding Viewer Multi-Screen Migration" and billed as based on a complex, multi-dimensional segmentation analysis that was developed by Nielsen, focuses on a segment of consumers whom it dubs "Extreme Techies" and who it says watch significantly more broadband video than other consumers.
CTAM, the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing,
earlier this month released the results of a survey of the video viewing
habits of teenagers across traditional television and other platforms.
Survey participants were asked what types of video content they view
on any device: user-generated video clips ranked highest at 76%,
followed by comedy clips (69%), music videos (65%), full-length
movies (63%), movie trailers or previews (60%), sports (52%), sitcoms
(44%), documentaries and educational video (44%), news and political
clips (42%), dramas (36%) and celebrity/gossip clips (25%).
