FX Cashes in on 'Sons of Anarchy' Buzz with T-commerce iPad App
-- Companion App Lets Viewers Buy Clothing Worn by Cast Members
FX may be the first cable network to make tcommerce the focus of a companion app for a TV series, building an app for Apple's iPad that allows fans of hit program Sons of Anarchy to buy jewelry, clothing worn by cast members and other merchandise.
The "SOA Gear" app is scheduled to launch Nov. 1, coinciding with the debut of episode nine of the FX show. The app uses automatic content (ACR) technology to deliver content to the iPad that is synched with the broadcast, showing viewers which products that are available in various scenes.
Viewers that buy Sons of Anarchy Blu-ray discs will also be able to watch content that is synched to the program, thanks to BD-Live technology.
With Sons of Anarchy ranked as the No. 1 scripted drama on basic cable, FX could use the app to drive commerce revenue from the program. The fourth season of SOA is averaging 5.8 million total viewers and 39.9 million adults 18-49.
