UK commercial terrestrial broadcaster, ITV, has launched a version of its ITV Player programming catch-up service for the Android platform, and says that versions for iOS (iPhone, iPad) and other mobile platforms will be available later this year.
The new ITV Player app is now available for mobile phones running Android 2.2 and above, and provides users in the UK (note: access is geo-restricted) with access to the last seven days of programming content from ITV's ITV1, ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4 channels over WiFi (note: streaming over mobile networks is not currently supported). It is "initially" offered free of charge, ITV says, and is ad-supported. "I'm very excited to be launching our first ever ITV Player mobile app and genuinely believe that the simple design and high picture quality of this app is a leap forward in providing our customers with what they want to watch on the move," Robin Pembrooke, managing director of ITV Online and On Demand, said in a prepared statement. "Android is just the first step in a mobile strategy that will see us rolling out ITV Player across mobiles and tablets, including iPhones and iPads, across the rest of this year."
According to ITV, the roll-out of the Android version of the ITV Player is part of a five-year plan to improve its online TV performance and distribution.
