Fox Broadcasting confirmed Friday that the reality show, "American Idol," will allow Facebook-powered online voting, starting Tuesday, March 1st immediately after the show's first performance episode (airs 8:00-9:30PM, Eastern/Pacific). News of the development was broken by Entertainment Weekly last week (see the article published on itvt.com, February 25th); while People separately reported that Simon Cowell's new reality show, "The X-Factor," will also shortly offer voting via Facebook.

In order to begin the online voting process, which is sponsored by AT&T (note: the show will continue to support voting for all viewers via toll-free phone lines, as well as unlimited text-message voting for AT&T Wireless customers), viewers will have to visit americanidol.com during the show's voting window, and will be required to log in using their Facebook account (note: online voting will be limited to Facebook accounts in the US, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands). They will then be taken to an "American Idol" voting page, which will present names and photos of each of the current contestants. In order to cast their vote, viewers will have to complete a security verification before submitting their selection. They will be able to cast up to 50 online votes for each episode's contestants. "We have been wanting to do online voting for several years, and now Facebook has offered us a secure solution and we are ready to go," Simon Fuller, "American Idol's" creator and executive producer, said in a prepared statement. "The show has always involved a high level of engagement with its viewers through texting and phone voting, and it's great to expand on this tradition."

In other "American Idol" news: Fox also said Friday that "American Idol" judge, Jennifer Lopez, is partnering with americanidol.com to offer viewers the opportunity to choose the ending of the music video for her new single, "On the Floor." Through 12:00PM Eastern on Thursday, March 3rd, "Idol" fans can log on to americanidol.com/jennifer_lopez to view different endings for the video and vote for their favorite. The world premiere of the video--complete with its viewer-selected ending--will air during the Thursday, March 3rd episode of "American Idol" (8:00-10:00PM Eastern live/Pacific tape-delayed).
