Content protection and video optimization specialist, Widevine, and OTT specialist, Boxee, said Wednesday that they will collaborate to make Widevine's adaptive streaming, virtual DVD controls and DRM technologies available in consumer electronics devices containing Boxee's software platform. As a result, the companies say, Boxee customers will be able to access more high-quality, premium content than ever before. "We are excited to work with Boxee, one of the most innovative media center platforms available today," Widevine CEO, Brian Baker, said in a prepared statement. "Currently the Widevine platform is available in over 250 million CE devices worldwide and we continue to widen our footprint in the global CE device market. This agreement with Boxee moves us closer to our goal of becoming the world's foremost provider of video optimization solutions and DRM."
According to Widevine, its software platform has been deployed by numerous Internet content services and large cable, satellite and telecommunications companies launching OTT and TV Everywhere strategies. The company--which bills the platform as optimizing the entertainment experience for content delivered over any network to any device--claims that the solution is natively supported in nearly all major brands and types of connected consumer electronics, including TV sets, Blu-ray players, mobiles and gaming systems.
In an interview with Light Reading Cable's Steve Donohue, Widevine CEO Baker stated that the companies have reached an agreement with a "large content service" that will allow Boxee to deliver "major motion pictures" to devices equipped with its platform. Widevine's technology would also enable Boxee to offer live TV channels to its content line-up, though the company has not yet announced any deals to offer such a service.
