HickoryTech, an integrated communications provider that operates a regional fiber network in Minnesota and Iowa, said Wednesday that it has tapped Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) to provide it with a multiscreen IPTV platform that will enable it to offer personalizable interactive TV applications built by independent developers, as well as such advanced services as HDTV, PVR and fast channel-change. The HickoryTech-Nokia Siemens Networks contract also covers professional services, including care services, the companies say. "There is a growing demand for a superior TV experience that allows a high degree of interactivity and personalization," Damon Dutz, president of HickoryTech's Consumer and Network Solutions division, said in a prepared statement. "In addition to enabling a new and intuitive PVR service, the open environment of Nokia Siemens Networks' multiscreen IPTV platform allows us to work with independent developers to offer new applications that satisfy the changing needs of our customers."
According to Nokia Siemens Networks, its multiscreen IPTV platform includes an interactive applications toolkit based on Interactive Markup Language (IML). This toolkit, the company says, enables personalized content, such as live weather and stock market information, to be accessed via on-screen widgets. The company bills the software as facilitating faster development and roll-out of interactive applications, thus creating new revenue streams for operators and delivering a more useful service for subscribers. "Our vision is to promote application innovation and help service providers deliver a new generation of end-user experiences," Jouni Welander, head of the IPTV customer team for Nokia Siemens Networks' North American operations, said in a prepared statement. "Operators like HickoryTech can utilize advanced features of our open platform and launch new services for the ultimate anytime, anywhere viewing experience for their customers."
