Walt Disney Studios last week launched a free, video-enabled "Disney Movies" app for the Apple iPad. According to the company, the app allows users to preview recent trailers, read synopses of featured movies, access information on local theaters and showtimes for Disney films, and buy tickets via Fandango and other online movie ticketing services. The first new-release Disney movie to be featured on the new app is "The Sorcerer's Apprentice."
For movies that are available via Disney's Home Entertainment division, the app additionally allows users to purchase Blu-ray discs and DVD's through Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy and the Disney Store (note: Disney says that more partners will be added with future updates of the app). It also allows users to purchase movies for download into their iTunes or Vudu account. "The Disney Movies app is a perfect way for our fans to learn more about the amazing creative content that is currently available from The Walt Disney Studios," Greg Brandeau, Walt Disney Studios' CTO, said in a prepared statement. "Whether they want to head straight to their local theater, buy the latest Blu-ray or DVD, download the newest digital release on their iPad, or search and discover new details about our films, the Disney Movie app provides fans with a dynamic and engaging experience."
According to Disney, more than 60 movies are featured in what it bills as the app's "innovative user interface," and the app can be updated as soon as new content becomes available. The company says that an iPhone/iPod touch version of the app will be available later this summer, and that apps for other smartphones are also in development. The launch of Disney Movies follows a strong performance by the Walt Disney Company's first iPad app: the ABC Player app, which the company says has been downloaded over 850,000 times since the iPad's April 3rd launch and has generated over 4.5 million episode plays. Other iPad apps from Disney include ESPN ScoreCenter XL and ESPN Pinball.
