TeliaSonera International Carrier said Tuesday that its Media Distribution Service (MDS) has been chosen by Philips Consumer Lifestyle as the technology platform for new VOD services on Philips Net TV, its CE-HTML-based connected TV platform for the European market (note: according to Philips, Net TV--which is available on the company's 7000-, 8000- and 9000-series TV's as well as on the Cinema 21:9--allows viewers to use their remotes to browse Web sites and access online services, and "brings the TV and Internet experiences together in an open, easy-to-use and standardized environment, creating an enriched interactive TV viewing experience").
According to TeliaSonera, its Media Distribution Service will manage the distribution of video content "from upload right through to TV's" via the company's own fiber-optic network; and will thus allow Philips Net TV to bring online VOD stores directly to consumers' TV sets. The company says that a number of major VOD providers have signed up to provide services to the Philips Net TV platform, including VideoFutur in France and Belgium, VideoLand in Benelux and film2home in Scandinavia (note: other online services available through Net TV--complete with TV-optimized interfaces--include YouTube, TomTom, eBay, MeteoGroup, Funspot, Dailymotion, Screendreams and Netlog). "With our Media Distribution Service integrated into Philips Net TV, we can work with video content partners to help them bring high-quality content direct to consumers' TV sets, such as the work that we are doing with film2home in the Nordics, VideoFutur in France and Belgium and VideoLand in Benelux, with more to come onboard," Paul Dahlgren, TeliaSonera International Carrier's VP and head of product and business management, said in a prepared statement. "These innovations are indicative of the current opportunities that exist to create interactive services on TV, as well as for creating new revenue streams from ad revenues to ecommerce, and points to further potential opportunities in the future for content holders."
