Immersive Media Powers 360-Degree Interactivity for CBC, iClips Network, MapQuest

--Company Also Recently Secured Interactive Video Deal with Vail Resorts

Immersive Media, a Calgary, Alberta-based company which has developed a patented technology, dubbed imLIVE, that enables viewer-controlled, 360-degree, live, full-motion, interactive video experiences (note: the experience of watching video powered by the technology is akin to watching a video version of Google Street View), said Tuesday that it has added three high-profile companies--CBC/Radio-Canada, iClips Network and MapQuest--to its customer roster.

According to Immersive Media:

  • CBC/Radio-Canada, which is Canada's national public broadcaster, is using imLIVE to power an online, interactive version of its "CBCSports Hockey Night in Canada" programming. Dubbed "Hockey Night in Canada All-Access" and set to be offered in conjunction with select hockey games throughout the rest of the season, the online service has Chevrolet as its presenting sponsor.
  • iClips Network, a provider of live streaming media, will be using the company's cameras and technology platform to offer live and on-demand 360-degree interactive video of events, concerts, music festivals, sports and more.
  • MapQuest, an AOL-owned provider of online mapping and navigation solutions, is using the company's platform to offer 360-degree photographic street views for 30 cities and 13 suburbs across the US.

Immersive Media bills its technology as allowing each viewer--with a simple click and drag of a computer mouse--to control their own point of view of a piece of online video, looking sideways, up or down, or all around, while also having the ability to pause or zoom in or out of the action. "We've been seeing significant traction for our technology in the latter half of 2009 and early 2010, and are especially thrilled to be working with these leaders in their respective industries--online mapping, live-streaming-media and public broadcasting--to bring unique and interactive experiences to their customers," Immersive Media president and CEO, Myles McGovern, said in a prepared statement. "These companies are all trusted brands, and we are honored to help them deliver innovative, new offerings based on our 360-degree video technology."

Earlier this month, Immersive Media announced that it had been tapped by Vail Resorts to power 360-degree interactive videos for all five of the latter's mountain resort Web sites (vail.com, beavercreek.com, breckenridge.com, keystoneresort.com and skiheavenly.com), as part of a marketing campaign "designed to give viewers a taste of the fantastic views and extraordinary experiences offered at each resort."
