Video rental company, Netflix, and IFC Entertainment, a Rainbow Media-owned distributor of independent and foreign films, last week announced a partnership that gives Netflix the US rights to offer 53 IFC Entertainment titles over-the-top on TV's and computers.
According to Netflix, the deal--which represents IFC Entertainment's first subscription-based online streaming partnership (note: the company does however offer downloads on such services as Amazon, iTunes and Blockbusters)--means that Netflix customers on the company's unlimited plan will be able to instantly watch the newly acquired films via a range of Netflix-ready devices, including Blu-ray disc players and new Internet TV's from LG Electronics, Blu-ray disc players from Samsung and from Best Buy's Insignia brand, the Roku digital video player, the Microsoft Xbox 360, the Sony PlayStation 3, TiVo DVR's, Internet TV's from Sony, and--in the near future--Internet TV's from Vizio. The films launched on Netflix's service last Friday.
Scripted US films covered by the deal include John Sayles' "The Brother from Another Planet" and "Return of the Secaucus Seven," Christopher Nolan's first film "Following," Joe Swanberg's "Nights and Weekends," James Toback's "When Will I Be Loved?" and Rebecca Miller's "Angela." Documentaries covered by the deal include Errol Morris's "The Thin Blue Line" and "Gates of Heaven," Joe Berlinger's and Bruce Sinofsky's "Brother's Keeper," and Jim Stern's and Adam Del Deo's "So Goes the Nation." Foreign-language films covered by the deal include Susanne Bier's "Brothers," Hirokazu Kore-Eda's "Nobody Knows," and Catherine Breillat's "Sex is Comedy."
