CBS Mobile and The CW, a broadcast network that is a joint venture between CBS and Warner Bros. Entertainment, on Wednesday announced the launch of two new CW applications--CW City Wize and CWTV--for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch.
CW City Wize, which is sponsored by Target, is a mobile city guide which provides users with maps that highlight actual locations seen or talked about on the CW shows, "Gossip Girl," "90210" and "Melrose Place." Locations will be updated in the app as new episodes air, the companies say, and some locations displayed on the app also feature video clips from the three shows. In addition, the companies say, users can see mapped locations and read reviews of various "hot spots"--including restaurants, bars, clubs, hotels and stores--within the cities where the shows take place: New York City, Beverly Hills and Hollywood (Los Angeles). Some of the featured "hot spots" will provide users with promotional perks, the companies promise, such as 10% off a meal or a free dessert.
CWTV, meanwhile, provides users with photo galleries and with video clips of all The CW's current programming, including previews, recaps, cast interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. In addition, the companies say, it allows users to create custom video feeds featuring their favorite content; share videos and photos with their friends; and link out to iTunes to purchase full episodes of "Gossip Girl," "90210," "Melrose Place," "The Vampire Diaries," "One Tree Hill," "America's Next Top Model," "Supernatural" and "Smallville." It also includes a detailed programming schedule.
"The CW is proud to have some of the most passionate fans in all of television, and we're thrilled to offer them an imaginative way to further immerse themselves into the world of their favorite shows, wherever and however they want, with our new CW City Wize and CWTV apps," The CW's EVP of marketing and strategy, Rick Haskins, said in a prepared statement. "These fun and engaging mobile offerings allow us to further extend The CW brand into this vibrant platform and also enhance the TV experience for the fans of our shows." Added CBS Mobile's VP of entertainment and sports, Randy Ahn: "We are excited to deliver CW fans innovative new ways to get engaged with hit shows like 'Gossip Girl' and 'Melrose Place'--much the way sports fans do through their fantasy teams. With the City Wize app, fans can literally walk in the steps of their favorite characters--visit the hottest restaurants, shop at the trendiest stores and view the actual locations where scenes from hit CW shows were taped. Fans also get unique access to CW programming thorough the CWTV app, including an extensive photo gallery, detailed searches, and schedules for their favorite shows, all through their iPhone or iPod touch."
