--Al Jazeera Launches Mobile Video App for Symbian and Windows Mobile Phones
Spanish-language broadcaster Univision's Univision Interactive Media arm has launched a "Univision Movil" application for the Apple iPhone/iPod touch. The free app, which is now available in the Apple App Store, provides users with access to short- and long-form content from Univision's shows via what the broadcaster claims is an "easy-to-navigate and innovative" multi-touch user interface. Video is presented in a number of categories, including news, entertainment, soccer, TV shows, sports, horoscopes and special events. "The ladunch of our Univision Movil Video App further demonstrates our commitment to providing US Hispanics with the best possible interactive entertainment experience, wherever they might be," Univision Interactive Media president, Kevin Conroy, said in a prepared statement. "Increasingly, fans of Univision's programming have told us they want to consume content on-the-go, and this app delivers that capability in a great way for iPhone and iPod touch users."
The app was developed in partnership with GoTV Networks. According to Nielsen figures cited by Univision, one in four US Hispanic/Latino mobile phone users is equipped with a smartphone, and one in five mobile video viewers is Hispanic/Latino.
In related news: Middle East-based news network, Al Jazeera, on Monday launched a mobile application, called simply "Al Jazeera," that it says provides access to its Arabic and English programs live and on-demand, on Symbian or Windows Mobile phones worldwide. The app, which was developed by Mobiclip, allows live viewing of Al Jazeera's News Channel in English and Arabic, and on-demand viewing of its Video News Bulletins. It runs on WiFi, 3G and Edge networks, the broadcaster says. "This is an exciting new development--the launch of a world-class application that will facilitate the viewing of Al Jazeera's English and Arabic channels, and made-for-mobile VOD service, for users around the world," Phil Lawrie, Al Jazeera's director of global distribution, said in a prepared statement. "The launch of Mobiclip's Al Jazeera app is another initiative that helps us to meet our goal of serving our audience through multiple platform technologies." Added Mobiclip CEO, Andre Pagnac: "The Mobiclip application demonstrates the performance of our global video delivery platform. The billing system is simple and works across various platforms, such as Symbian and Windows Mobile. Through the Mobiclip application we are making Al Jazeera available to millions of mobile phone users worldwide, and this in itself is a major step in digital video distribution."
