--i-CAN3810-HD Supports MHP-Based Interactive TV Services via Ethernet Port
Geneva-based set-top box company, Advanced Digital Broadcast (note: the company, generally referred to as ADB, is the corporate stablemate of interactive TV software and services specialists, Vidiom Systems and Osmosys), announced last week that it has launched its first high-definition interactive digital terrestrial set-top box for the Italian retail market. According to the company, the i-CAN3810T-HD, as the box is branded, is being distributed in retail outlets throughout Italy by ADB partner ZAP, and will support the Mediaset Premium pay-TV service, which is accessed via a pre-paid card or through the Easypay subscription solution. Mediaset claims to have made significant investments in exclusive content, including a range of original entertainment programming, and Serie A and UEFA Champions League soccer rights. "Italian viewers have demonstrated their desire to see premium pay-TV content on digital terrestrial TV, and it is natural that they should now want to watch these programs in high definition on their new flatscreen TV sets," Eugenio Pettazzi, Mediaset's head of digital terrestrial operations, said in a prepared statement. "The i-CAN brand is recognized in Italy for delivering a first-rate consumer TV experience: great picture quality, strong interactive features and ease of use. We are very pleased to have ADB and ZAP among our partners to ensure our customers have a choice of great HD set-top boxes to enjoy the Mediaset Premium service."
According to ADB, the i-CAN3810T-HD enables viewers to receive any free or paid HD MPEG-4 AVC or SD MPEG-2 programming broadcast over DTT in Italy. It supports various widely used conditional access systems (Nagra, Irdeto, Conax) the company says, provides HDMI HD and Scart SD outputs, and is compatible with home theater systems. It is also billed as incorporating an Ethernet port to support MHP-based interactive TV services over broadband, and a USB connection that will enable additional functionality in the future. Other product features, according to ADB, include auto install, over-the-air software downloads, an EPG, parental controls and "simple, intuitive" menus.
