--"Chapin Circle" Producers Say Patent Pending for "Character Selection" Option

An Internet TV series called "Chapin Circle" (http://www.chapincircle.tv) recently premiered, which, in addition to providing viewers with 10-to-15-minute full episodes, provides them with an option dubbed "Character Selection" that allows them to watch an abbreviated version of each episode through the eyes of their favorite character.

The show centers on the lives and relationships of four Midwestern women--Heather (in her 20's), Annie (in her 30's), Becca (in her 40's) and Susan (in her 50's)--who live on the same suburban street and spend the first hour of each morning walking together. The "Character Selection" option (for which the show's producer, West Fifty-First Street Productions, says a patent is pending) complements each full episode of the show with four mini-episodes that are billed as allowing viewers "to tailor their experience to the character they want to watch--without ever losing the scope of the show as a whole." According to the show's creator, West Fifty-First Street principal Michele Palermo, the "Character Selection" option is "a writing, editing and broadcasting format...that...might just be the future of Internet TV. Say you don't have time to watch a full episode," she explained. "Or that you believe you're only interested in one character--you can watch just that character's story and still experience the full dramatic engagement of the show."

Palermo says that she developed the new female-targeted show in response to the fact that women have less and less time to watch traditional TV. "Most of my friends no longer watch TV--they're too tired at the end of a day to wade through hooks and gimmicks to find a character they can relate to," she explained. "They'd rather spend those 30 'me-time' minutes taking a bath. But they all log on to the Internet every day...What if their Internet time could translate to 'me-time?' If there was a great narrative television show with episodes brief enough to view on the Web, but substantial enough to entertain them, perhaps even inspire them--about people who look and live like they do--maybe they'd tune in."
