Ericsson announced Tuesday that it is enabling Sweden's largest cable operator, Com Hem, to deliver new on-demand and interactive services via an interactive TV platform which it designed and integrated, and which is comprised of hardware and software solutions from its subsidiary, Tandberg Television, including the latter's OpenStream Digital Services Platform, Xport Producer and EQ8096, as well as solutions from Espial and various other third-party vendors.
According to Ericsson, the platform supports a range of advanced services, including VOD, catch-up and start-over TV, music-on-demand, and an interactive TV portal for a landlord-tenant service offered by Com Hem. The company says that the roll-out of new services based on the platform has already begun, and that it is expected to reach around 500,000 subscribers by December. "With the solution from Ericsson, we can provide comprehensive on-demand digital services to our customers and offer viewers a wealth of interactive and personalized TV," Com Hem CTO, Martin Kull, said in a prepared statement. "Ericsson has brought together and integrated multiple vendors' solutions, from content ingest to set-top box, and created an end-to-end system based on a hybrid digital video broadcasting and IP approach." Added Jan Wareby, head of Ericsson's multimedia business unit: "This project demonstrates our ability to partner with operators and deliver valuable TV solutions. We have the best-in-class technologies, integration expertise and resources to help operators deploy complex systems that enable new services and increased revenues."
The middleware piece of Com Hem's new platform is provided by Espial. "Espial IPTV middleware provides us with a powerful, high-performance platform to deliver a superior user experience and the possibility to rapidly add new, innovative services," Com Hem's Kull said in a statement. "With it, we've developed and launched a range of on-demand and interactive TV services including VOD, start-over TV, catch-up TV, landlord-tenant management portals and other interactive services, based on a hybrid DVB and IP approach."
