Edgeware Powers VOD, nPVR for Armenia's First IPTV Service

Edgeware, a Stockholm-based provider of VOD server systems, contacted [itvt] Tuesday to let us know that Armenian service provider, Ucom, has deployed its Orbit-2X video server platform to drive what it claims is Armenia's first IPTV service. According to Edgeware, the Orbit-2X platform features a built-in capability to record live TV channels, enabling Ucom to offer advanced on-demand services, including network PVR and VOD. "Delivering the country's first IPTV deployment that includes nPVR, Ucom has clearly taken the lead in providing innovative and exciting services to the Armenian market," Mikael Samuelsson, Edgeware's VP of channel sales, said in a prepared statement. "Edgeware's success with Ucom is a direct result of the cooperation with one of our strategic global OEM partners to enable advanced on-demand TV services."

The Edgeware servers that have been deployed by Ucom are part of an end-to-end IPTV solution that is being provided to the operator by Ericsson. According to Edgeware, each Orbit-2X server streams 20Gbps of video to 16,000 concurrent users from just one half-depth rack unit, while consuming less than 85W of power and requiring "virtually no" maintenance.
