Alcatel-Lucent in Interactive TV Applications Deal with German Cable Operator, Tele Columbus

Alcatel-Lucent announced last week that it has signed an agreement with German cable operator, Tele Columbus (claims to serve around 2.5 million households), that will see the companies launching interactive TV applications on Tele Columbus's independent cable networks throughout Germany during the fourth quarter. According to the companies, the apps will allow viewers to use their remote controls to access and purchase additional content linked to a specific consumer brand product, and will also include voting, quiz and gaming apps.

Alcatel-Lucent says it will deliver the interactive TV services covered by the deal across Tele Columbus's platform, using its Interactive Media Manager solution, which it bills as enabling the creation and management of unlimited interactive applications for multiple platforms and services. The company claims that this "integrated and flexible approach" can reduce the cost of creating and managing ITV applications by over 80%. "As one of the leading cable network operators in Germany, we are a major driver of digital TV and additional value applications," Tele Columbus chief commercial officer, Dietmar Schickel, said in a prepared statement. "With our interactive program, we will be among the trendsetters in our market. We are delighted to be cooperating with such an experienced partner, whose solution will make distributing interactive content considerably easier." Added Alcatel-Lucent Deutschland president, Alf Henryk Wulf: "Our partnership with Tele Columbus illustrates the aim of Alcatel-Lucent to set the pace in the introduction of new digital communications. Our innovative solutions support Tele Columbus in building a new relationship with its customers and broaden its horizons by introducing new potential sources of revenue."

In other Alcatel-Lucent news: The company announced Monday that Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (du) has launched an advanced IPTV service called du TV+. According to Alcatel-Lucent, the service is based on its IPTV solution, which includes Microsoft Mediaroom middleware, Alcatel-Lucent operations and service-fulfillment solutions, and--in the case of du TV+--some custom applications and services. The service's interactive features include VOD and PVR functionality.
