--OTT Deal with Conde Nast Digital to See Launch of Several Additional Boxee Apps
Conde Nast Digital announced Tuesday that it has formed a content distribution partnership with over-the-top-TV platform, Boxee (note: earlier this month, the latter announced that it had secured $6 million in new financing--see article published on itvt.com, August 13th). As a result, broadband video content from its Wired.com and Style.com properties, as well as runway photo slideshows from Style.com, are now available via new Boxee apps. "Boxee is a unique platform for users in the living room to discover new content, and maintain a relationship with sites they already love," Richard Glosser, Conde Nast's executive director of emerging media, said in a prepared statement. "We continue to focus on offering new ways for our loyal users and new fans to experience our award-winning videos and photos, and are excited to bring our brands to the TV with Boxee."
Conde Nast Digital says it also plans to make content from its other Web sites available on Boxee at a later date. Its Boxee feeds will automatically update as new video content is added to Wired.com and Style.com, the company says.
In other Boxee news: In a posting on the company's blog, Monday, CEO Avner Ronen announced the availability of video applications from FORA.tv and UNICEF in the Boxee App Box.
According to Ronen, FORA.tv "curates high-quality videos about the people, issues, and ideas changing the world" and has "the Web's largest collection of unmediated video drawn from live events, lectures and debates...at the world's top universities, think tanks and conferences." FORA.tv's new Boxee app offers over 5,300 videos, with an average run-time of around an hour, and organizes its content into six categories: Economy, Environment, Politics, Science, Tech and Culture. "You could watch FORA.tv for eight hours a day and it would take just under two years to finish watching all videos," Ronen wrote. "Thankfully, there is a built-in search function."
UNICEF's new Boxee app, meanwhile, provides users with access to the UN-sponsored children's advocacy organization's TV programs, podcasts and photo essays. "The addition of FORA.tv and UNICEF to content from OpenCourseWare, UK's Open University, TED, and PBS are making Boxee a TV experience that will make you smarter," Ronen concluded.
