A&E Uses Augmented Reality Game to Promote New Season of "Criss Angel: Mindfreak"

US cable channel, A&E, has tapped New York-based creative communications agency, Circ.us, to develop an augmented reality game in order to drive interest in the new season of its magic-themed show, "Criss Angel: Mindfreak" (premieres August 12th). Dubbed "The Five Lives of Criss Angel Augmented Reality Experience" and located on A&E's Web site (http://www.aetv.com/5-lives-of-criss-angel/5-lives-augmented-reality/), the game challenges viewers to navigate a "game piece" that always levitates upwards, through a series of 3D mazes.

In order to play the game, viewers must be equipped with a Web cam and a printer: the augmented reality experience is activated when the viewer prints out a special icon or "marker" on the site and holds it up to their Web cam. They then navigate the game piece through the mazes by rotating the marker in order to move the mazes so that the game piece can continue levitating unobstructed; by collecting various goals, they can proceed to higher levels: "When a level begins, the game piece will begin levitating upwards," A&E explains. "The game piece will stop moving when it reaches a corner and is not able to move upward. Rotate or tilt the marker to move the maze and allow the game piece to continue rising along the path." A video of the game is embedded above.
