--Service Launched on Viera Cast-Enabled HDTV's in April
Panasonic announced Tuesday that Amazon Video On Demand is now available on its full line of 2009 Viera Cast-enabled Blu-ray disc players (note: the Viera Cast over-the-top platform, which has a built-in Ethernet interface, is accessed by pressing a special button on the remote control and entails no usage fees; it also offers access to YouTube, Picasa Web Albums, Bloomberg News and weather information). The company--which launched Amazon VOD on its Viera Cast-enabled plasma HDTV's back in April--says that current owners of its 2009 Blu-ray disc players automatically received a free software update Tuesday that will allow them to begin accessing Amazon VOD as soon as they register their device with the service.
According to Panasonic, Amazon VOD on Viera Cast-enabled Blu-ray disc players will allow customers to 1) browse and shop from a library of over 45,000 commercial-free titles, 1,000 of which are available in HD; 2) instantly stream content with "no downloading, no waiting and no subscription fees"; and 3) access and add to their virtual library of purchases, via Amazon VOD's Your Video Library, and rewatch them on their Viera Cast-enabled Blu-ray disc players, or online via PC's, Macs and other devices.
Panasonic says that it has extended Viera Cast to all its 2009 Blu-ray disc players, including the DMP-BD50, BD70V, BD80 and B15 (a portable device). "Having our Viera Cast feature on our line of 2009 Panasonic Blu-ray players means you can now access the best of the Web, directly from your living room," Richard Simone, director of Panasonic's Entertainment Group, said in a prepared statement. "The introduction of Amazon Video On Demand to our Viera Cast offerings gives every owner of a 2009 Panasonic Blu-ray player access to a vast collection of movies and TV shows, including HD-quality new releases, on virtually any digital television. And you can take it on the road with you too with Panasonic's Viera Cast-enabled, B15 portable Blu-ray disc player."
