--Bravo's Show Devoted to Video Gaming, Travel's to Ghost Hunting
Bravo (UK), a Virgin Media Television-owned channel, which, in contrast to its US namesake, targets a young, male demographic, announced Monday that it has signed a year-long acquisition deal with independent production company, Ginx TV, that will see it airing "GameFace"--which it describes as a weekly "mainstream video gaming series dedicated to interactive entertainment"--later this summer.
According to Bravo, the show--which will be hosted by Julia Hardy (Current TV, Kerrang! TV) will not only cover interactive entertainment, but will itself be interactive: viewers will be invited to choose which games are featured on each episode, the channel says, and will also be able to take part in tournaments, quizzes and competitions. "It is time to update video gaming television to fit the new era of video gamers," Ginx TV managing director, Udi Shapira, said in a prepared statement. "Video gaming should be fun, all about entertainment and not just about information. For interviews, previews and trailers you can buy a magazine, or go to the hardcore gaming Web sites. 'GameFace' is here to entertain you...pure and simple." Added Bravo acquisitions manager, Ronan Hand: "The gaming community is a vast and varied group that has previously been underserved and overlooked on British TV, and we know from our past success with similar formats what Bravo's core audience want. In partnership with Ginx TV, Bravo will bring gaming out of the niche and into the mainstream."
In related news: Travel Channel (US) has announced plans for an interactive seven-hour live special based on its "Ghost Adventures" show. The special, set to air on October 30th, will see the "Ghost Adventures" crew locking themselves in the reputedly haunted Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, WV (which happens to be the second-largest hand-cut stone building in the world--the largest being the Kremlin). According to Travel Channel, "Ghost Adventures" will have "unprecedented access to the entire asylum, from the seclusion cells where the most violent patients were shackled, to the medical center where hundreds of primitive ice-pick lobotomies were performed." Viewers will be able to chat with the crew during their lockdown, post messages on a dedicated bulletin board, send SMS messages, and monitor Webcams located throughout the asylum building, Travel Channel says.
