YouTube Experimenting with 3D Video

See video

YouTube--or at least one of its engineers--has begun experimenting with 3D video, according to a report in the blog, Search Engine Roundtable. The report is based on a thread in the YouTube Help forum, in which a YouTube engineer who goes by the moniker, YouTube Pete, writes that he is working on a "stereoscopic player as a 20% project" (note: Google engineers are encouraged to spend 20% of their work week--i.e. one day a week--on projects that interest them, a number of which--including AdSense, Gmail and Google News--have subsequently been launched as commercial products).

The player allows viewers to choose between 10 different 3D viewing modes (e.g., "Red/Cyan Glasses: Full Color," "Red/Cyan Glasses: Optimized (Dubois)," "Red/Cyan Glasses: B&W," "Amber/Blue Glasses: Full Color," etc.), as well as "Left Image Only" and "Right Image Only" modes. It is activated by adding the tag, "yt3d:enable=true" to uploaded videos. The thread in which YouTube Pete discusses his project can be viewed here; an implementation of the project can be viewed above.
