--Combines Remote Control, Keyboard and Mouse/Trackpad Functionality
A developer called Albert Lee has built an iPhone/iPod touch application that provides all-in-one remote control, wireless keyboard and mouse/trackpad functionality for users who have hooked their TV up to a computer in order to access over-the-top-TV services such as Boxee. Dubbed the HippoRemote and available through the Apple App Store for $4.99, the device offers customized controls for Boxee, XBMC, Windows Media Center, iTunes "and all your favorite Web browsers, to name [but] a few," Lee writes on the app's dedicated Web site (hipporemote.com). Lee also claims that it works with "Mac, Windows, Linux and anything else that can run a VNC server." Version 1.1 of the application, currently awaiting approval from the Apple App store, also provides wake-on-LAN support, Lee says.
The HippoRemote has garnered at least one very positive review to date: from Boxee co-founder and VP of business development, Gidon Coussin, who wrote on his company's blog, Monday: "30 seconds into playing with the HippoRemote iPhone App, I knew this is what I was looking for for a while now...The mouse trackpad is VERY nice, intuitive and responds nicely. Double-clicking is an ease and HippoRemote did a great job emulating a real mouse."
