--Deal Follows Agreement between Macrovision and NDS Announced Earlier this Year
Macrovision--the company which last year acquired the US's dominant EPG developer, Gemstar-TV Guide, and which recently announced that it would change its name to Rovi, as part of a complete revamp of its brand identity--and interactive TV and conditional access technology provider, NDS, announced last week that Australian pay-TV provider, Foxtel, has signed a multi-year license agreement for Macrovision's EPG patent portfolio.
Foxtel, which is a customer of NDS, is licensing Macrovision's EPG patents under an EPG patent agreement between Macrovision and NDS that was announced in April and that was billed as providing NDS with a license to the EPG patents under Macrovision's Gemstar patent portfolio and as allowing NDS to offer licensed EPG's to its pay-TV platform operator customers in certain specified countries. "We are pleased to announce Foxtel as among the first NDS customers to benefit from our new patent license agreement with Macrovision," Gorm Nielsen, NDS's SVP of business development, said in a prepared statement. "We believe that operators will benefit from the option to license Macrovision EPG patents alongside NDS' own leading technology and service offerings, part of our ongoing effort to help pay-TV providers bring a richer viewing experience to their audiences." Other international pay-TV operators that are currently licensing Macrovision's EPG patents include BSkyB and Sky Italia.
