Japan's KDDI Providing SeaChange-Powered Wholesale VOD Service to 17 Cable Operators

VOD, IPTV and advanced advertising technology provider, SeaChange International, said Wednesday that, since launching a wholesale VOD business based on SeaChange technologies and services approximately two years ago, Japanese telecommunications giant, KDDI, is now enabling 17 Japanese cable operators to offer on-demand movies and TV shows, and will enable a VOD service from Japanese broadcaster, NHK, later this year. According to SeaChange, the success of KDDI's service illustrates how larger operators can use their bandwidth and geographic reach to create new revenue streams from video.

KDDI was already providing wholesale VoIP, backbone Internet and other IT services to around 70 cable operators when it launched its VOD wholesaling service back in 2007. The service currently offers around 6,000 titles, including regional and international content. It is based on SeaChange's Axiom On Demand content delivery platform and its MediaCluster video servers, which, SeaChange says, allow KDDI to fully manage its operator customers' self-branded VOD services from central network operations centers. According to SeaChange, its platform automates content propagation across the network, along with managing promotions and a range of business rules, thus eliminating the complexities of establishing and running a VOD service. The company also says that its professional services organization is closely involved in deploying KDDI's wholesale VOD platform to its customers. "KDDI's work with SeaChange has brought to reality our vision for helping our cable partners to work around the barriers to on-demand television," Yuji Fujimoto, executive director of KDDI's Cable Television Alliance division, said in a prepared statement. "The KDDI on-demand service empowers these operators to concentrate on making available the most compelling mix of services and programming to their unique audiences, while we manage the technical and business requirements that ensure the content is delivered reliably and at the highest quality." Added Lincoln Owens, SeaChange's director of broadband for the Asia Pacific region: "The service that SeaChange helped build with KDDI proves the opportunity for the on-demand wholesaling business model." SeaChange operates a Japan sales and service arm, located in Tokyo.
