Tandberg Television says that Korean wired/wireless communications provider, KT, has selected its EN8090 HD MPEG-4 AVC and EN8030 SD MPEG-4 AVC encoders to support the launch of linear TV channels on its Mega TV IPTV service. The latter has around 700,000 subscribers and was initially legally restricted to offering only VOD. However, recent regulatory changes in Korea mean that IPTV providers can now also retransmit broadcast services. "KT is one of the world's most innovative telecoms companies and the Mega TV IPTV service has established itself as one of the leading IPTV services globally," Dario Choi, general manager of Tandberg Television Asia Pacific, said in a prepared statement. "We are proud of our long-standing relationship with KT for the provision of IPTV, and pleased to expand and further strengthen Mega TV." Although KT's selection of Tandberg's headend equipment followed a competitive tender, the telco already uses a range of the company's headend and contribution and distribution equipment for the Mega TV service.
A second Korean broadband provider, SK Broadband, has also tapped Tandberg to provide it with an IPTV headend that will allow it to offer linear broadcast TV in addition to its existing line-up of VOD content. The headend includes Tandberg EN8030 SD MPEG-4 AVC encoders, EN8090 HD MPEG-4 AVC encoders, iPlex for IP multiplexing, and RX1290 SD/HD Integrated Receiver Decoders.
