Company Trumpets NBC's Use of its Platform for Beijing Olympics
At the recent TelcoTV show in Anaheim, Calif., Minerva Networks unveiled a new application-development environment for its IPTV service management and delivery platform. Dubbed iTVTools, the new offering is billed as offering a broad set of open API's, in-depth documentation, and sample applications that are designed to minimize the time-to-market for new applications and services.
According to Minerva, iTVTools provides all the tools needed to take advantage of the extensibility features of its flagship iTVManager platform, including the newly released Minerva Widget Engine. The company says it is currently providing technical assistance and end-to-end application certification to a select group of developers: the TelcoTV show saw two of those developers, Nortel and Integra5, demoing a number of applications, including "Enhanced Caller ID," "Digital Vault," and "TV Chat." Minerva also used the show to demo a set of widgets that used the RSS standard to deliver real-time weather, stock and news information to the TV. "Extensibility is the key to service differentiation," Minerva CEO, Mauro Bonomi, said in a prepared statement. "Our customers are demanding new IPTV applications that take full advantage of their two-way broadband networks. We believe iTVTools will enable third-party developers to implement and deploy a broad range of innovative applications." Minerva says that iTVTools will be released commercially in the first quarter of 2009. The company claims that its iTVManager platform has been deployed in over 120 locations around the world.
In other Minerva news: The company has revealed that the iTVManager platform was chosen to provide the IPTV platform used by NBC during the network's coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. According to Minerva, the platform was used to record and view video delivered over NBC's private broadband network: it says the service consisted of three video channels, one in HD and two in SD, transmitted at 16MB and 5MB respectively. "IPTV technology has made great progress in the past few years and it can now be used effectively in such a critical environment as the Olympics," Minerva's Bonomi said in a prepared statement.
