VOD technology provider, Concurrent, says that Portugal's largest cable operator, ZON TV Cabo, has chosen its flagship MediaHawk Content Delivery System to power its expanded VOD service. The expanded service is scheduled to launch in Lisbon and Porto in the fourth quarter. "Concurrent's innovative technology, exemplified by the unique resilient streaming feature, was one of many reasons we chose Concurrent's MediaHawk 4500," Andre Almeida, ZON TV Cabo's head of product development, said in a prepared statement. "The Portuguese cable market has become very competitive, and it was important that we partner with a VOD vendor who could provide us a stable platform which could support the advanced interactive and entertainment features necessary to maintain our status as the number-one video provider in Portugal." ZON TV Cable, which is a subsidiary of ZON Multimedia and claims to have over 1.5 million customers, offers pay-TV, broadband data, and voice services. It says that its new VOD system will offer an "advanced interactive and entertainment experience."
In other Concurrent news: The company says that Taiwanese IPTV operator, Chunghwa Telecom, used its MediaHawk Content Delivery System to provide on-demand coverage of the Beijing Olympics. Chunghwa used both the MediaHawk 4000 and 4500 models to support high-definition VOD programming in what it claims was the first and largest on-demand Olympics initiative in Asia. "We are proud to have been part of this historic event," Concurrent president and CEO, Dan Mondor, said in a prepared statement. "Chunghwa's Olympics on Demand is yet another demonstration of how Concurrent's products have been used in innovative ways to increase video-on-demand viewership, bringing compelling content to large audiences with the ease of use and robustness required of today's VOD systems. Concurrent's proven expertise in time shifted television and nDVR applications puts us at the leading edge of VOD technology, placing us in an excellent position as we continue to expand our business in Asia Pacific." Chunghwa, which claims that it was the only Taiwanese IPTV provider to offer large-scale on-demand Olympics coverage--says that it its subscriber numbers grew by 50,000 (around 8%) during the games. Its VOD service was delivered in H.264.
