Sky Active - the new version

BSkyB finally completed its transition of interactive services from Open... to Sky Active, in the process integrating all its own branded, enhanced-style, single-screen applications. This means the main Sky Active service is available via the EPG's Interactive menu and/or on a contextualised basis by pressing the red button while watching any Sky-branded channel (for example, if watching Sky News, one gets a menu with access to all features of Sky Active and Sky News Active). The interface has been totally overhauled, the menu screens looking much cleaner and rather posh in a mix of blues, with options always being listed down the left side. The user can continue watching television until a Sky Active shop or service is selected, in which case a sales video takes over – but at least one sees less of them than was the case with Open. The color button keys are now used to provide direct access to specific products that may be displayed on the right of the screen. Banner ads are certainly graphically richer, and their edges are rounded. When making purchases, users can now access their address and credit card details from any shopping-related menu. However, individual vendors are not so prominently displayed - time will tell if they mind about this. That said, all in all Sky Active is much easier to use, and a vast design improvement on Open. It’s about time! Now to get some better vendors please.
