ESPN, with satellite broadcaster, DirecTV, and ITV services provider, Wink Communications, has launched "ESPN Today," a dedicated ITV sports channel for DirecTV Interactive. Design for the interactive channel application was supplied by Intellocity. ESPN's Bryan Burns tells [itvt] that they plan to develop and launch more applications with a variety of developers in the future. "ESPN Today" actually soft-launched on June 5th, he said, but today is the public announcement. To view it, subscribers must have the advanced digital set-top box and tune to channel 490. The first dedicated ITV sports channel of its kind for U.S. subscribers, "ESPN Today" will offer viewers an array of interactive timely statistics and scores, sports stories, current league standings and schedules. Links will be provided to connect the viewer to other ESPN network channels. Although we'd like to see it, don't expect to hear an announcement from DirecTV and ESPN that the companies have launched a multi-camera angle application on "ESPN Today" like what one sees on SkyDigital's Sky Sports Active. That may take a while. Will one see sports wagering over this platform? Certainly if US betting laws are ever liberalized. By the way, other services on DirecTV's interactive platform include their DirecTV Interactive Center (portal - different services), the interactive Weather Channel, and, late in August, expect the interactive Barnes & Noble shopping application for books.
