Verizon Upgrades its FiOS TV Interactive Media Guide

In a posting on a Verizon blog, Wednesday, the company's SVP of media relations, Eric Rabe, announced that it is upgrading its FiOS TV Interactive Media Guide in order to "make on-screen purchasing and navigation faster and easier." According to Rabe, the upgrade was in response to feedback from FiOS TV customers: "FiOS TV customers wanted more detailed program information, interactive video-on-demand, more shortcuts and easier ways to upgrade their FiOS TV, and I'm happy to say the folks in the FiOS lab have come up with some pretty neat responses," he wrote.

Cloud-Based Games Company, OnLive, Nabs Funding from AT&T, Lauder, Warner, Autodesk, Maverick

OnLive, a cloud-based gaming company that was founded by Steve Perlman (the entrepreneur behind WebTV, Moxi and a range of other technologies) and that officially launched in March after operating in stealth mode for several years, said Wednesday that it has secured an undisclosed amount of funding in a Series C round that saw the participation of new investors, AT&T Media Holdings and Lauder Partners (the primary backer of cloud-based interactive TV technology provider, ActiveVideo Networks), as well as previous investors, Warner Bros., Autodesk and Maverick Capital.

Ustream Launches Partner Program, Enabling Members to Generate Revenue via Google In-Video Ads

In a post on its corporate blog, Wednesday, live Internet broadcasting company, Ustream, announced the launch of a partner program that it says will allow its service's content providers to share revenues generated by advertising associated with their content. The program sees Ustream integrating Google's new Video API, enabling it, it says, to serve Google in-video ads and to use Google's backend for analytics and payments.

TiVo Remote-Scheduling App Launched for BlackBerry Smartphones

--TiVo's Audience Research Arm Has Mixed News for "The Jay Leno Show"

TiVo and Research in Motion (RIM) on Wednesday launched a free remote-scheduling application for BlackBerry devices. The app, which works with standalone TiVo Series2 and later DVR's (but not with TiVo-enabled cable and satellite boxes) and requires BlackBerry OS 4.2.0 or later, features an interface that replicates the look-and-feel of the standard TiVo set-top interface. Among other things, the app lets users browse programming categories, popular shows, and daily picks; search for shows by keyword, title, category and actor/director; and add programming alerts to their BlackBerry calendar.

Elgato Launches TV Placeshifting Application for iPhone/iPod touch

--App Works with Company's Flagship EyeTV Solution

Elgato, the San Francisco- and Munich-based company behind EyeTV, a TV solution for Mac computers, on Tuesday launched a TV placeshifting application for the Apple iPhone/iPod touch. According to the company, the app, which is priced at $4.99, allows users to watch live and recorded TV, browse a program guide, and launch or schedule recordings remotely. It is designed for use with EyeTV 3.2, the latest version of Elgato's flagship TV-on-Mac software, and, according to the company, can automatically find a Mac on a local WiFi network that is running EyeTV 3.2, using Bonjour technology.

Five Teams with Livestation to Offer Live Streaming Soccer on Apple iPhone

UK commercial terrestrial broadcaster, Five, said Wednesday that it has teamed with broadband video specialist, Livestation, to offer live streaming of Europa League soccer on the Apple iPhone. It claims to be the first UK broadcaster to offer live streaming soccer via an iPhone app.

CBS's TV.com Launches "WatchList" Navigational/Organizational/Social Tool for Online TV Watching

CBS-owned broadband video/community site, TV.com (offers full episodes, clips, entertainment news, show summaries, polls, forums and more), on Wednesday unveiled a tool, called WatchList, which it says is designed to enable viewers to navigate and organize their TV experience and represents "an important step in TV.com's goal to be the navigational interface for television online."

Icareus in Interactive TV Games Deal with Chinese IPTV Provider, Shanghai Telecom

Helsinki-based interactive TV company, Icareus (note: the company's offerings include a range of authoring and delivery solutions for MHP, OCAP/tru2way, MHEG and other platforms, as well as an extensive catalog of off-the-shelf interactive TV games and other applications), said Wednesday that it has signed a cooperation agreement with Shanghai Telecom, a subsidiary of telecommunications giant, China Telecom.

Jinni Officially Announces Appointment of Mike Pohl as CEO

--Company Recently Announced Partnerships with OpenTV, SeaChange International

Jinni, an Israeli company that offers a semantic search-and-recommendation engine that it says is based on "content genetics and user psychographics," on Wednesday officially announced the appointment of Mike Pohl as CEO. According to Jinni, Pohl--who has been serving as its CEO since at least August (see the article published on itvt.com, August 12th)--has 25 years of telecommunications industry experience and a decade of focus on next-generation services such as VOD and advanced advertising.

CNN Launches Interactive News App for iPhone/iPod touch

CNN on Tuesday launched what it calls an "interactive news app" for the iPhone/iPod touch. The app, which is available in the Apple App Store for $1.99 (note: it will also be monetized through advertising; it currently features logos and banner ads from "launch advertisers" Chevron and Lexus), offers among other things live breaking news video, push notification, localization and personalization tools, and user-generated content capture and upload functionality, the broadcaster says.

An Internet TV series called "Chapin Circle" (http://www.chapincircle.tv) recently premiered, which, in addition to providing viewers with 10-to-15-minute full episodes, provides them with an option dubbed "Character Selection" that allows them to watch an abbreviated version of each episode through the eyes of their favorite character.

Avail-TVN--the company formed in July from the merger of VOD distribution services provider, TVN Entertainment, and Avail Media, a provider of managed content-aggregation services for smaller IPTV operators (see the article published on itvt.com, July 15th)--will once again hold its annual horror/Halloween-themed VOD promotion, "Fright Fest," starting October 1st. This year, the company says, the promotion will offer significantly more content than before.

SeaChange Powering New VOD Service for India's YOU Telecom

VOD, IPTV and advanced advertising technology provider, SeaChange International, announced Tuesday that Indian ISP YOU Telecom is using its software and servers to power a VOD service that is part of a new digital cable service called YOU SCOD18. Dubbed YOU Multiplex, the new VOD service is currently available to YOU SCOD18 subscribers in Mumbai, and is slated to launch in Bangalore and Vizag later this year. It will eventually reach over 2 million viewers, SeaChange says.

New Version of Neptuny's TV Recommendation Engine to Facilitate Application of Business Rules

Neptuny, a Milan-based company that offers a predictive content recommendation engine, called ContentWise, for digital TV, said Monday that ContentWise 3.0, which is slated to be released later this month, will offer several improvements. The most significant improvement, according to the company, will be a "user-friendly Web interface to define and apply business rules to better control the list of content to be recommended to target users according to specific marketing criteria." For example, the company says, the new release will allow business rules to be defined in order to assign higher relevance to specific content--"i.e.
