Andy Dymoke, a senior product manager at OpenTV, died unexpectedly on April 22nd. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Suzie; by his son, Ned; and by his sisters, Jill and Susan. A memorial Web site for him has been set up at: http://andy-dymoke.memory-of.com/About.aspx.

--Deal Will Allow Hulu to Significantly Expand its Programming Line-Up
The Walt Disney Company announced Thursday that, via its ABC Enterprises subsidiary, it will join NBC Universal, News Corp. (Fox) and Providence Equity Partners as a joint venture partner in and equity owner of the popular broadband video service, Hulu. The deal means that CBS is now the only major US broadcast network not involved in Hulu, which, according to recent figures from comScore is now the third-most popular broadband video site after YouTube and Fox Interactive Media.
--Nearly One in Five UK and Irish Households Now Have a Sky+ DVR --Sky Anytime Push-VOD Service Used by Over 1 Million Households Each Week
UK satellite-TV provider, BSkyB, announced Thursday that its Sky+ HD service has now been deployed in over a million Sky households (1,022 million, compared to 465,000 this time last year), following record sales in the first three months of 2009. The company says that the growing popularity of HDTV has also contributed to the rapid growth of its Sky+ DVR service, which is incorporated in all Sky+HD boxes: including the Sky+ HD customer base, Sky says, the Sky+ DVR service (which is powered by technologies from NDS and OpenTV) added 406,000 net new subscribers during the quarter and is now in over 5 million homes--almost one in five homes in the UK and Ireland.
--Claims 62% of Consumers Want Broadband Video on their TV --Also Claims 62% of Online Adults Surf Web While Watching TV
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) released a study, Wednesday, which it says shows that demand for Internet-connected television sets is growing rapidly. According to the study, entitled "Net-Enabled Video: Early Adopters Only?," around half of prospective TV buyers say that they are likely to purchase an Internet-connected TV; nearly half (48%) of US adults who go online would use their Internet-enabled TV to find out more information on upcoming shows or to identify a song that played during a show; and 44% would also use it to find out more information about a show's actors.
--Also Launches New "Heroes" Broadband Video Spin-Off Series
Broadcast network NBC's broadband video-enabled NBC.com Web site unveiled several new advertising capabilities and a new full-episode widget Tuesday (note: NBC recently announced that NBC.com's Rewind player had generated over a billion full episode streams over the past 18 months--see the story posted on itvt.com on April 16th). The company bills the new advertising capabilities as allowing brands to "stay front and center as users interact with the content around their favorite shows." They include:
--Trial Slated for Second Half of the Year
During Time Warner's Q1 earnings call, Wednesday, the company's chairman and CEO, Jeff Bewkes, provided an update on "TV Everywhere," its initiative to make programming that pay-TV customers have already paid for through their cable, satellite or IPTV subscriptions available to those customers on broadband and mobile platforms. "The idea is simple," Bewkes explained. "If you subscribe to a TV channel at home you can watch it for free on broadband from any provider, wherever and whenever you want, on-demand. With over 90% of US households already paying for television, programmers will be able to give consumers even more for their money," he continued.
--Losses Include Substantial Non-Cash Impairment Charges
VOD technology provider, Concurrent, on Tuesday released financial results for its fiscal third quarter, ended March 31st: --Revenues totaled $19.2 million, compared to $19.4 million for the year-ago quarter.
--Awards to be Hosted by Howie Mandel
Cable channel, GSN (formerly known as the Game Show Network), announced Tuesday that comedian Howie Mandel will host its June 6th Game Show Awards (8:00PM ET, 7:00PM CT), which it bills as "the first awards show exclusively aimed at celebrating excellence in the genre of game shows."
ICT Results, an editorial service created by the European Commission to showcase European Union-funded research in information and communications technology (ICT), published a report, Wednesday, on an EU-funded project called Enhanced Learning Unlimited (ELU), that was established to develop methodologies and tools for enabling learning via interactive TV ("t-learning").
UK satellite-TV provider, BSkyB (Sky), announced Tuesday that it is launching a green button-based "bookable" and "on-demand" advertising service that will allow viewers to easily access long-form advertising.
--"Social Media Event" to Use Twitter, Facebook Connect, Live Mobile and Online Chat
Cable channel, Bravo, has announced plans to hold a live "virtual viewing party" for the May 5th finale of its reality series, "The Real Housewives of New York City" (10:00PM ET/PT). During the show's broadcast, viewers will be invited to voice their opinions through Twitter, Facebook Connect and live mobile chat, and also to interact with one another through Facebook Connect.
MySpace UK and FremantleMedia last week announced plans to offer a new, interactive broadband video drama series, called "Freak," that has been developed by FremantleMedia's new-media arm, FMX, and that is sponsored by Red Bull and by Procter & Gamble's Tampax brand. The show--which is set to launch on MySpace UK in July (international versions of the show are slated to launch some time later), and which FremantleMedia describes as an "edgy, teenage coming-of-age story"--will have its own MySpace page, where two new short-form episodes will be uploaded each week (note: eight of the show's 13 episodes will be available in HD).
Jason Hirschhorn, the former president of Sling Media's Entertainment Group who resigned from that position earlier this year, has been named chief product officer of News Corp.-owned social networking company, MySpace--in what may be a sign of MySpace's growing interest in providing broadband video programming and other digital entertainment content. Prior to joining Sling Media, where he was tasked with, among other things, implementing that company's broadband video entertainment service, Sling.com, Hirschhorn served as chief digital officer at MTV Networks, overseeing the company's digital media businesses, products and strategies.
--Show Will also Invite Viewers to Upload Videos
MTV announced plans for a new, one-hour, daily, live entertainment show, Tuesday, that it says will make viewers "the stars of the program." The show--which has the working title, "The Alexa Chung Show," and which will be hosted by the eponymous UK TV personality and model--will employ microblogging/social media service, Twitter, to allow viewers to "interact with Alexa, celebrity talent, their own friends and the rest of the pop culture-loving world on the spot and in the show," a press release from MTV states. "Whether Alexa's audience is at home, on the move, or on the set, Twitter and MTV will capture their experiences and bring them right into the show," the release continues.
