Atlanta-based interactive TV technologies and services company, itaas, has announced that it is working with Comcast on a new program to "help cable operators quickly and reliably deploy a standard interactive television platform" based on CableLabs' EBIF specification. Under the terms of the companies' deal, itaas will license an EBIF engine developed by TVWorks (note: the latter, which was initially a joint venture between Comcast and Cox, is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Comcast), and offer cable MSO's an EBIF deployment package that includes a license, deployment support, and maintenance services.

At the NCTA Cable Show in Washington, DC Monday, interactive TV and conditional access technology provider, NDS (note: the company is now a private company, co-owned by the Permira Funds and News Corp.), announced that it has been chosen by cable MSO, Cox Communications, as the prime integrator for the latter's tru2way platform, which is slated to launch this summer.
Showtime Networks has contacted [itvt] to let us know that it is seeking a student intern for its interactive TV department. According to the company, the intern--whose hiring is under the auspices of the Showtime Networks Summer Internship Program--will assist with the production, development and testing of its ITV initiatives, performing a range of tasks, including research, logging, wire framing, bug testing, writing, editing, photo manipulation and brainstorming. Required skills include Photoshop and Flash, creativity, and the ability to communicate. An understanding of Final Cut Pro and HTML would also be "a plus," according to the company.

At the NCTA Cable Show in Washington, DC this week, ActiveVideo Networks (formerly ICTV)--a San Jose, Calif.-based company which offers a platform that it bills as intelligently streaming both traditional and Web-based content to digital set-top boxes and Web-connected CE devices and as combining the personalized, dynamic socially connected experience of the Web with the quality, immediacy and remote-control navigation that end-users expect from television (note: the company recently announced a deployment with Oceanic Time Warner--see [itvt] Issue xxx)--is showcasing for the first time third-party applications that were developed independently of its content-development team, using its Web-based content-creation tools.
--Secures Deal to Provide HD DVR to Israel's Yes --Claims to Have Shipped over 1.5 Million IP Set-Top Boxes
Geneva, Switzerland-based set-top box manufacturer, Advanced Digital Broadcast (note: the company, generally known by the acronym ADB, is the corporate stablemate of Vidiom and Osmosys), says that Evolution Digital, a company that specializes in bandwidth reclamation solutions and advanced set-tops, will serve as a "key partner" in its efforts to sell tru2way-enabled set-top boxes to smaller North American cable operators. "We welcome Evolution into the ADB family of distributors," Jim Lomax, ADB's EVP of worldwide sales, said in a prepared statement. "ADB has employed a strategy of using strong distribution partners around the world to represent our industry-leading set-top and software solutions for smaller network operators.
At the NCTA Cable Show in Washington, DC Monday, US cable industry research, development and standardization body, CableLabs, and Canoe Ventures--the company that is implementing Project Canoe, the US cable industry's initiative to create a national unified platform for interactive and addressable advertising (it is backed by Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox, Charter, Cablevision and Bright House)-- announced a new draft reference architecture specification that is designed to further the development of advanced cable advertising products.
Studio-backed subscription-free broadband/personalized TV service, ZillionTV (note: for an in-depth overview of the company, see [itvt]'s recent interview with its CEO, Mitch Berman, in Issue 8.33), has announced a content agreement with indie studio, The Weinstein Company.
Interactive TV software company, Zodiac Interactive, is demo'ing a new, tru2way-based ITV movie guidance application at the NCTA Cable Show in Washington, DC this week. The demo is taking place on tru2way set-top boxes from Advanced Digital Broadcast (ADB). According to Zodiac, the new guide, dubbed the Interactive Television 2.0 Movie Guide, uses movie data feeds from Macrovision Data Solutions in order to display detailed information that cross-references movies, cast members, genres and more.
At the NCTA Cable Show's Broadband Nation exhibit this week, Comcast Media Center (CMC) is teaming with a group of companies to demo advanced interactive TV applications, based on the ETV standard, that are currently being tested, launched and supported by its HITS AxIS platform.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Interactive Media Peer Group (IMPG) has announced that the deadline for entries for the Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media is April 24th.
