NBCU's Digital Studio to Develop "Brand-Centric" Interactive Entertainment

NBC Universal last week relaunched its Digital Studio, which is now
tasked with developing and producing "brand-centric" digital content
(including both episodic programming and what NBCU describes as
"deep interactive experiences"), distributing them across the company's
various digital properties, and also finding and developing quality
digital programming into which advertiser brands can be "organically
integrated."

Ofcom Moves to Tighten Regulation of Participation TV

Following the UK's recent participation TV scandal, that country's
broadcast regulator, Ofcom, has proposed new rules to tighten
regulation of TV and radio programs that rely heavily on premium-rate
telephone services (PRS).
The body says that its proposed changes to
the UK's Broadcasting Code will "ensure that programs that invite
viewers and listeners to interact or participate are not vehicles for
promoting commercial, revenue-generating services," and will also
"ensure that viewers are adequately protected and that advertising is
kept separate from editorial content, as required under European
legislation."

The new rules state that when PRS is used in a program for audience
participation:

AFI Digital Content Lab Developing Prototypes with PBS, ABC, Earth Echo

The American Film Institute Digital Content Lab has announced the
companies, organizations and media properties that will be
participating in its next production cycle: PBS ("NewsHour"),
ABC.com ("Grey's Anatomy"), and Earth Echo.
The Lab, now in its
tenth year (note: it was originally known as the Enhanced TV
Workshop, but subsequently changed its name to reflect a focus on a
broader range of interactive media), brings together media
companies/properties and volunteer "mentors" (i.e. individuals and
companies with extensive experience in interactive media), in order to
create innovative interactive prototypes. "The new slate of prototypes
promises to be one of our most exciting and challenging to date,"

International Interactive Emmy Award Winners Announced

At the MIPTV conference in Cannes earlier this month, the
International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the
winners of its International Interactive Emmy Awards (note: the
awards, which were organized in partnership with Reed MIDEM, were
hosted by UK comedian, Brian Conley). The winners (together with
descriptions of their winning projects, provided by the International
Academy) were:

Comcast Launches AnyRoom On Demand

Comcast, the US's largest cable MSO, last week launched a service
called AnyRoom On Demand to its digital cable customers in New



Jersey who are equipped with Motorola set-top boxes (note: the
company says that New Jersey customers with Scientific-Atlanta digital
set-tops will receive the new service later this year, and that it also
plans to roll it out in other markets over the course of the year). As its
name suggests, the new service--which requires no extra equipment and

Time Warner Cable of NY & NJ Launches Start Over-Enabled "Enhanced HDTV"

Time Warner Cable of New York and New Jersey has announced plans
to expand its HDTV programming line-up, which it says will see it
carrying 100 HD channels and "more than 250 HD On Demand
choices" by the end of the year. The company is launching what it is
calling "Enhanced HDTV," a free offering that includes Start Over (i.e
the ability to start a program over during its allotted timeslot, without a
DVR) for both high- and standard-definition programs.
It claims that
customers with HD-enabled set-top boxes will be able to Start Over
more than 13,000 SD and around 1,500 HD choices per month at no
additional charge. "By delivering the most HD choices and Enhanced

BBC iPlayer Now Available on the Nintendo Wii

The BBC has formed a partnership with Nintendo UK to make its BBC
iPlayer "catch-up TV" service available via the Nintendo Wii gaming
console (note: last month, the Corporation also made the iPlayer
available via the Apple iPhone).
The partnership was announced by
Erik Huggers, the BBC's group controller for future media and
technology, in a keynote speech at the MIPTV-Milia conference in
Cannes earlier this month. "Working with Nintendo marks another
exciting milestone for BBC iPlayer," he said. "It underlines our
commitment to reaching new audiences by making BBC iPlayer

ICTV in ActiveVideo Deal with iPanel Technologies

ICTV, a Silicon Valley-based company that offers solutions for
bringing Web media to television, announced last month that it has
signed a deal with iPanel Technologies, a provider of embedded
software platforms for digital and IPTV services and applications.
The
deal is designed to increase the availability of ICTV's flagship
ActiveVideo technology and service in China and other Asia-Pacific
markets. (Note: ActiveVideo technology mixes linear and on-demand
programming with broadband content from the Internet, and delivers it

BBC Three Relaunched with More Interactivity, UGC, Social Networking

The BBC recently relaunched its younger-skewing digichannel, BBC
Three, as a multiplatform service with programming that heavily
features interactivity, user-generated content and social-networking
components.
The channel, which according to its controller, Danny
Cohen, aims to "become Britain's ambitious multiplatform network,
combining television and the Web into a single, integrated offering,"
now simulcasts all its programming on the Internet; invites viewers to
upload clips of themselves introducing their favorite programs, the best
of which are featured during the channel's peak-time schedule; and,
according to its press materials, promises to produce original, online

VideoClix in Video Hotspotting Deal with Revision3

Vancouver-based VideoClix, a provider of "hotspotting" (i.e. clickable
video) technology, has signed a deal with Revision3, a company that
bills itself as "an actual TV network for the Web" and that develops and
produces original broadband TV shows.
Revision3 plans to use
VideoClix' technology to enable its viewers to click on different objects
within a video--for example, show hosts and products--in order to
access additional information and "interesting facts." The first
Revision3 show to employ the technology is one of the company's most
popular, "DiggNation," which began using it April 11th. Other shows
set to offer hotspotting as a result of the deal include "Internet

Usage of CBS Sports' March Madness on Demand Increases Significantly

CBS Sports contacted [itvt] last week to provide statistics on the
broadband video service it offered for the recent NCAA Division I
Men's Basketball Championship (popularly referred to as "March
Madness"). According to the company:
