White Paper: Online TV Guide Optimisation

Creating an online TV guide has become an increasingly popular and profitable strategy. Providers have found that TV Guides create a sticky page that visitors will return to time after time, enabling highly effective monetisation opportunities.

Although we have become familiar with the move of TV and print content online, TV guides have often been left out of the discussion, despite being one of the integral elements of the TV experience. Guides are an essential tool that nearly all viewers use frequently[*], whether read online or in print.

Building an online guide comes with its own unique set of challenges- some of which are already familiar to developers and some that are unique to TV. Visitor habits vary depending if they are on the web, reading a printed TV guide, or navigating the EPG, and what works for in a magazine or on TV will not necessarily work online. This is further complicated by the fact that the environment requires a large amount of time-sensitive and linear information be provided in an easy-to-consume way.

This white paper covers the challenges of creating an online TV guide in detail, and explains how a web TV guide can be launched and monetised effectively without incurring substantial complexity.
