Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, YouTube, Metacafe, Friendster, Foursquare, Google+, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, not to mention Social TV apps: GetGlue, Miso, Tunerfish, IntoNow, Philo… the list just goes on and on. With all of these existing and emerging social networking sites, how do we find enough time in the day to be socially active AND eat, sleep, and LIVE?!
There is a new type of exhaustion that the world is feeling and it is being dubbed: Social Media Fatigue. The point of social media is to connect and engage, but how are we supposed to engage if we spend all of our time connecting in to the 40981239813 social networking sites out there? With the accessibility to these networking sites through apps and push notifications, it seems as though, social networking isn’t a part of our lives, but rather the through-line of our daily existence.
On a personal level, this is something that we can fight, as seen by some people who refuse to become engaged in social networking, or something that we can embrace. The tricky part of embracing social networking is not driving yourself crazy checking-in, blogging, and commenting back. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Know how much time you want to dedicate to social networking a day and select which networking sites you want to be involved in accordingly. In the case of social networking, quality is WAY better than quantity. Decide to be really active in engagement with others on the sites that you chose to be a part of.
On a professional level, many people feel the need to be more present than their day allows for them to be. Businesses, small and large, are in need of high visibility when it comes to social networking. In the case of my life, I am thankful for social media fatigue because it provides me with a job. Celebrities don’t have the time to properly invest in their social media or the time to keep up with this ever-changing field of social networking. This is where I step in: I take the pressure off of social media by keeping up with what they should be and leveraging their social media based on where we are in the social media world.
