How Much Time is There for TV

ASChaigneau's picture

On Channel 5 (UK) last night the Virgin Media Ad has a gentleman telling us with gusto that with their Virgin offer (TIVO) you can Record 2 Programmes whilst watching another.  Because there are several great shows on at the same time!  With 100s of channels there are probly much more than that - Oh sorry no there is not.  Most of it is rubbish, old and repeated.  The system will allow you to store up to 500 hours of TV Programming.  They also offer catch-up and OTT ... Just how much time can you spend watching TV?   We  have  on our PVR 30 episodes of CSI, 12 House and 22 Art programmes, several kids films and lots of World Cup rugby!    We could never watch it all in succession as it would drive us to distraction due to the reptition factor (same old same old) ... how many ways are there to kill people in CSI, or how many wierd disease in House?  Yes its great to have your favourite shows recorded but to be surprised by new and 'out-of-the-blue' content selected by a TV Producer and the Programming team is also very, very nice.   A Terabyte of storage is quite absurd when you think about it.  VHS tapes never consumed electricity nor do CDs and DVDs or Blu-ray disks...Much more eco-friendly and never lost when your disc crashes.  They do!  However I must admit for ease of recording a PVR is great but we musn't exagerate, after all its only supposed to be entertainment!

Agreed. But what is more difficult is finding what you'd like to watch when you want, not so much how much. As you say scheduling your PVR to record easily the programs that you like is great, but having them their when you want, completely organized is tremendous. Time is precious, and this single function is too. What's more difficult is the editing, purging as you say. I suppose that's why he show 'Hoarders' attracts solid viewing numbers. it's our nature to collect (how many DVD's, VHS's do we have in our bookshelves, yikes). To actually engage an automatic delete if not watched or 'stored for a later time' within a given time period would be helpful...and who knows, perhaps create a new behavior in entertainment consumption.
