Agreed. But what is more difficult is finding what you'd like to watch when you want, not so much how much. As you say scheduling your PVR to record easily the programs that you like is great, but having them their when you want, completely organized is tremendous. Time is precious, and this single function is too. What's more difficult is the editing, purging as you say. I suppose that's why he show 'Hoarders' attracts solid viewing numbers. it's our nature to collect (how many DVD's, VHS's do we have in our bookshelves, yikes). To actually engage an automatic delete if not watched or 'stored for a later time' within a given time period would be helpful...and who knows, perhaps create a new behavior in entertainment consumption.
