ZON TVCabo Selects Tandberg's OpenStream VOD Backoffice Platform

--Tandberg Says its Edge QAM Now Supports Privacy Mode Encryption

Tandberg Television--the company which over the past two years or so
has purchased VOD infrastructure provider, N2 Broadband, interactive
TV technology and services provider, GoldPocket Interactive, IPTV
content delivery company, SkyStream Networks, and Internet video
company, Zetools; and which was itself subsequently acquired by
Ericsson--says that Portugal's ZON TVCabo has selected its
OpenStream Digital Services backoffice platform to support its planned
launch of VOD services.
ZON TVCabo, which has around 1.5 million
customers, offers a range of pay-TV services over cable and satellite,
including multi-camera-angle interactive TV applications and
interactive TV games. According to Tandberg, the operator's new VOD
service will offer an "advanced interactive...experience." "TVCabo is
the market leader for pay-TV in the country and already has a
sophisticated digital cable network in place," Tandberg business
development director, Edward Allfrey, said in a prepared statement.
"We developed the OpenStream platform to allow flexibility,
scalability and the lowest possible total cost of ownership by utilizing
open architectures, and without sacrificing performance, security or
freedom of choice, which is ideal for TVCabo's needs. We are
delighted to play a key integration role in this deployment of VOD
across Portugal."

The OpenStream platform was originally developed by N2 Broadband.
Tandberg bills it as allowing cable operators to easily deploy VOD and
nPVR services using whichever combination of third-party VOD
servers, applications, billing systems and other system components they
prefer. The company claims to have deployed six OpenStream systems
in Europe to date, including with UPC Netherlands and Multimedia
Polska; the platform, which has been widely deployed in North
America, also has multiple deployments in the Asian market, including
with Tianjin TEDA Cable, Star Communication and Oriental Cable
Network (Shanghai).

In other Tandberg Television news: The company says that its
universal Edge QAM, the EQ8096, will support Privacy Mode
Encryption in order to provide an additional layer of protection for
VOD and other on-demand services. "We continue to expand the
capabilities of our universal Edge QAM and to build on our leadership
in on-demand television," Al Nunez, president of the Americas for
Tandberg, said in a prepared statement. "The availability of Privacy
Mode Encryption further increases the security of our solution and
enables the protection of valuable content rights for MSO's and
programmers. The ability to economically expand VOD content
offerings is an important initiative within all MSO's today, and the
EQ8096 is the ideal platform to enable secure encryption." Tandberg
bills the EQ8096 as offering high density, reliability, low power
consumption, and built-in redundancy; and as enabling an easy
migration to IP through its support of DOCSIS 3.0 and M-CMTS (it
also supports DVB Common Scrambling Algorithm and SimulCrypt,
the company says). It supports up to 96 QAM channels in a 2RU
chassis.
