Gotuit Launches Video Tagging Application, SceneMaker

--Allows Consumers to "Videomark" Specific Segments of a Video

Gotuitondemandhome2006sm_1 Gotuit Media--which 1) has developed a search/navigation system that combines segment metadata with VOD content, allowing viewers to use their remote control to quickly access the specific parts of an on-demand show that interest them (the company has used the system to power VOD services that have been deployed on a number of Time Warner Cable and Comcast systems in New England, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio), and which 2) recently entered the broadband video space with the launch of a broadband video portal, Gotuit.com, which it touts as using its search and navigation technology to make "loading, buffering, and waiting to watch videos online a thing of the past" (see [itvt] Issue 6.87 Part 3)--has launched a "social video tagging" application called SceneMaker, which makes available to the general public a capability that until now has been available only to Gotuit staff and customers. According to the company, SceneMaker allows consumers to identify and tag specific scenes found within videos posted on third-party video-sharing sites such as YouTube and Metacafe. Thus, the company says, a Gotuit.com user, who finds, for example, a funny joke within a 10-minute comedy video posted to another video-sharing site, can use SceneMaker to bookmark (or "videomark," as Gotuit prefers to call the process) the 40 seconds or so of the video that contain the joke. The user will then be able to share the bookmarked scene via email or by posting it to his or her blog or Web site, Gotuit says. When viewed, the video will stream from the hosting site, while the scene metadata will be delivered by Gotuit, in order to allow the viewer to see just the bookmarked segment. Bookmarked segments will also be available to other Gotuit users, via the company's "InVideo" search engine. "By adding SceneMaker to the Gotuit portfolio we are empowering the community to discover and experience online video in a whole new way," Gotuit CEO, Mark Pascarella, said in a prepared statement. "We have created a simple, Web-based application that takes video beyond user-generated--to an entertainment experience that is completely user-controlled. Whether professional video or user-generated, we make it simple and easy for viewers to define the video segments they are most interested in and enjoy them in a superior viewing environment."
