BBC Study Measures Impact of Multiplatform Video on Linear TV Viewing

Bbcnewslogo2006 BBC News recently commissioned research company, ICM, to conduct a survey of online and mobile video viewing behavior and its impact on the viewing of traditional television. (Note: the survey was based on interviews with a random sample of 1,008 adults, aged 18+, recruited from ICM's online panel between November 17th and 19th, and on phone interviews with a random sample of 1,062 people aged 16+. Panelists were recruited from across the UK, and the results were weighted to correspond with the profile of all adults.) Among the survey's findings:

  • 9% said they regularly watched video online; an additional 13% said they watched occasionally; and a further 10% said they expected to start watching in the coming year. However, 2/3 said that they do not watch video online and that they do not expect to start doing so in the coming year.
  • 28% of those aged 16 to 24, 10% of those aged 25 to 44, and 4% of over-45's said they watch online and mobile video more than once a week (note: earlier this year, UK media regulator Ofcom said that the number of 16 to 24-year-olds watching TV in an average day had dropped 2.9% between 2003 and 2005).
  • 43% of those who said they watch video on the Internet or on a mobile device at least once a week said they watched less regular TV as a result.
  • One in five of those who watched online or mobile video at least once a week said they watch far less regular TV as a result; 23% said they watch a little less; and just over half said their TV viewing was unchanged. 3%, however, said that online video inspires them to watch more TV.
  • 3/4 of those who said they watch online and mobile video said they now watch more than they did a year ago.
