Tandberg Television Secures IPTV Wins in the US and Croatia

Tandberg Television--the company which over the past year or so has purchased VOD infrastructure provider, N2 Broadband, interactive TV technology and services provider, GoldPocket Interactive, IPTV content delivery company, SkyStream Networks, and Internet video company, Zetools--has announced three significant IPTV wins over the past few weeks:

  • The company says that Indiana-based indie telco, Rochester Telephone (provides service to around 6,000 households in Rochester and the rest of Fulton County), has selected it as the video headend supplier for a new fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP)-based IPTV service that will offer HD programming, PVR functionality, and TV-based caller ID, and that will be part of a triple-play offering. Rochester Telephone has built an MPEG-2 video architecture with two Tandberg Mediaplex-20 video headends because of the high-bandwidth capabilities of its fiber network. The telco says that it selected the Tandberg solution because of its high-density modular design, because it delivered high-quality HD and because of the "experienced team approach between all of the suppliers to make interoperability work and give us all the services we wanted at an affordable price." Rochester Telephone's new IPTV service is scheduled to launch later in the quarter. "We want to offer [our customers] a state-of-the-art triple-play service, including voice, long-distance, 150 channels of standard- definition national and local programming, eight channels of HDTV premium and local programming, PVR and caller ID on the television," Ron Riggle, Rochester Telephone's VP of operations, said in a prepared statement. "With affordable, high-quality video compression from Tandberg Television, we will truly leverage the power of our new FTTP network to offer an exciting IPTV service with excellent customer care that meets or exceeds the experience that cable can offer." According to Tandberg, the new deal with Rochester Telephone is the ninth IPTV deployment it has secured in Indiana: its Mediaplex-20 system also serves as a "super video headend" for the Indiana Video Network (IVN), a consortium of eight independent rural telcos that offer IPTV services; and its iPlex platform serves as the edge video headend for local program encoding and channel addition for some IVN members.
  • It says that Ohio-based Horizon Chillicothe Telephone has chosen the iPlex video headend for a major expansion of the channel line-up of its TV over VDSL ATM network. According to Tandberg, Horizon will leverage iPlex's high-density encoding, turnaround and transrating (bit rate reduction) capabilities to expand its triple-play offering with over 45 new standard- and high-definition channels. Horizon will also replace the video processing on over 20 of its existing 130 standard-definition channels with Tandberg's MPEG-2 encoding and transrating solutions. Tandberg positions the iPlex video headend as a 1RU compact solution designed specifically for regional distribution, headend expansion and smaller-scale IPTV deployments. According to the company, it provides a cost-effective video turnaround solution for telcos looking to deliver HD programming from primary sources or aggregators for re-broadcast over IP or ATM networks, without the need for decoding and re-encoding.
  • It says that its IPTV video headend and MPEG-4 AVC encoders have been selected by Deutsche Telekom for the DSL-based MAXtv IPTV service that is being launched by the latter's subsidiary, Croatian T-Com. Tandberg is working closely with Siemens Networks on the deployment, which sees Croatian T-Com using Tandberg EN5930 SD encoders, TT1222 professional receivers and TT7140 IP streamers to deliver 80 linear channels and a large selection of VOD movies. According to Tandberg, by using its upgradeable SD/HD MPEG-4 AVC solution, Croatian T-Com will be able to easily launch HDTV over DSL at a later date. "Operators such as Deutsche Telekom-subsidiary, Croatian T-Com, recognize that video is not an option, but an essential part of their service offerings," Eric Baron, president of Tandberg Television EMEA, said in a prepared statement. "The use of MPEG-4 AVC for the roll-out of this service is indicative of the standard's capabilities and readiness for primetime delivery. Our pioneering development work in advanced compression standards has made us the vendor of choice for many operators around the world and we are excited to be enabling Croatian T-Com to introduce these ground-breaking television services in Croatia."
