--Also Debuts Nine Exclusive New Shows on its Broadband VOD Service
MuchMusic, a music video channel from Canadian broadcaster, CHUM Television, has launched a user-generated content initiative, dubbed "Show Me Yours." The channel is inviting its viewers to upload content--including videos and p*hotos from their mobile phone, PC or Webcam--onto its Web site, and says that it plans to incorporate some of that content into its linear TV shows, "MuchAdrenaline" and "MuchOnDemand," and potentially into other shows as well. "MuchAdrenaline" is devoted to extreme sports, so, for the purposes of that show, CHUM is expecting viewers to contribute video and p*hotos of themselves and their friends performing athletic stunts; "MuchOnDemand," meanwhile, is a daily celebrity showcase and music request show, so CHUM is suggesting that viewers who want to be featured on that show video themselves making music video requests and asking questions of its guests. Viewers can, of course, also browse content uploads from other viewers on the site. The technology infrastructure for "Show Me Yours" is provided by a company called Filemobile. "MuchMusic is the industry leader when it comes to using technology to engage audiences," David Kines, CHUM's VP of music and youth services, said in a prepared statement. "Integrating fan-generated content with our on-air programming brings our online community even closer together."
MuchMusic is also launching nine exclusive new shows on its broadband VOD service, MuchAXS. The first of these shows is entitled "Headlines on Trial," and is a spin-off of MuchMusic's linear-TV show, "Video on Trial." It consists of a series of two-minute episodes, posted every other week, in which "Video on Trial's" panel of pop culture pundits discusses "what's making news in the world of pop culture." According to CHUM, the show will offer "candid commentary, scathing reviews and tongue-in-cheek profiling." Other original shows set to launch on MuchAXS include "FAQ You!," in which a character called Ed the Sock will "dole out advice for the technically challenged," and "Ed-itorials," in which Ed the Sock will unleash "his inimitable point-of-view on the target of the day." MuchAXS is also offering new content from "youth lifestyle" channel, Razer, including three anime titles from Japan ("Basilisk," "Samurai 7" and "Trinity Blood") and the magazine show, "969"; as well as more content from MuchMusic, including "Music is my Life," "MuchAdrenaline," "Screwed Over" and "Rock School II."
