--Unveils New Moxi Features at CTAM Summit
Paul Allen-owned interactive TV products and services company, Digeo, is trumpeting statistics that appear to show that its Moxi Media Center could increase usage of VOD by making it easier for cable customers to discover and access on-demand programming. According to the company, data gathered in early 2006 by its customer Adelphia shows that the percentage of Moxi-equipped customers in select markets who order VOD content is more than twice as high as for other Adelphia customers with VOD in the same markets. (Note: the Linux-based Moxi platform, which Digeo offers as a licensable reference design, allows end-users to store, access and manage a variety of entertainment content through a single, unified menu. The platform is notable for its interface, which has won two Emmy awards in succession, and which replaces the standard "spreadsheet" EPG interface with a so-called "cross-hairs" configuration, consisting of two intersecting animated lines at right angles to each other: customers use the left and right arrow keys on their remote control to scroll through a series of options on the horizontal line--e.g. Channels, Recorded TV, Find & Record, On Demand, Pay per View, Settings, etc.; they then use the remote's up and down arrow keys to scroll through the sub-listings of the currently highlighted option, which appear as a vertical line intersecting the line of options.)
Meanwhile, at the CTAM Summit in Boston last month, Digeo provided a sneak preview of a prototype of a future version of the Moxi interface, and unveiled three new Moxi features:
- A "real-time" Web scheduling capability that allows customers to review program listings, remotely schedule recording times, receive instant notification of potential scheduling conflicts, and resolve those conflicts.
- External hard drive connectivity: customers can now connect a certified, off-the-shelf external hard drive to an operator-entitled Moxi system using a standard USB 2.0 connection. According to Digeo, installation and recognition is truly plug-and-play, and consumers can add up to 500GB of additional programming storage.
- PC Link, a feature that allows customers to stream PC-based photo and music content to their networked Moxi Media Center systems, for browsing and display on television. The capability is compatible with both wired and wireless networks.
