The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Interactive Media Peer Group has just revealed the winners of the 2005-6 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Interactive Television. (Note: the Los Angeles-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is one of two organizations behind the US television industry's annual Emmy Awards--the other is the New York-based National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Both organizations have, for some time now, given out Emmy Awards for interactive television; the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' ITV Emmys are for creative achievement while the National Academy's Emmys are technology-focused. The Television Academy's interactive TV Emmys this year recognize achievement in two categories: programming designed for television and programming designed for new delivery platforms.)
The ITV Emmy winners were announced minutes ago at the American Film Institute Digital Content Festival by Brian Seth Hurst, co-governor of the Interactive Media Peer Group. The winners will be presented with their awards at the Television Academy's Creative Arts Awards event on August 19th at the Shrine Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles.
The winner of the Award for Outstanding Achievement for Enhanced or Interactive Programming: Television is the TiVo Service (TiVo). The other finalists in this category were: AOL Music on Demand (AOL/Time Warner Cable/Zetools); CNN Enhanced (CNN); and DirecTV Interactive Sports (DirecTV).
The winner of the Award for Outstanding Achievement for Enhanced or Interactive Programming: New Delivery Platforms is the ABC.com Full Episode Streaming Player (ABC). The other finalists in this category were Danny Bowles and the Jade Treasure, Stranger Adventures (Riddle Productions in association with Red Car); MLB.TV Mosaic (Major League Baseball/Ensequence); and Vongo Video Download Service (Starz Entertainment Group).
The finalists were selected by the membership of the Television Academy's Interactive Media Peer Group, who made their selections through an online voting system. The winners were then chosen by a "Blue Ribbon" panel that met July 10th at the Academy. The Blue Ribbon panel was composed of:
