At the NCTA National Show earlier this month, Comcast and Sony Pictures Entertainment announced plans to offer a "multiplatform network" devoted to horror movies and thrillers. The as-yet-unnamed service, which--appropriately--will launch on October 31st, will be advertising-supported. The companies say that it will initially be available on Comcast's VOD platforms and on the Internet (where it will be associated with a multimedia fan site that will feature exclusive horror movie outtakes, music downloads, original animation, and behind-the-scenes footage), and that a wireless mobile version (which will feature horror ringtones, sound effects and more) will be rolled out at a later date. It will leverage content from the Sony and MGM libraries: Comcast and Sony announced plans to create new distribution platforms for that content, when Comcast agreed to assist Sony in its acquisition of the MGM library last year. "We are excited to be launching the first of our joint channels with our partners at Comcast," Steve Mosko, president of Sony Pictures Television, said in a prepared statement. "More and more people are looking to a variety of sources for their entertainment, and this new channel will be available on multiple platforms simultaneously, redefining the idea of what a network is."
