TiVo Finally Launches Standalone Dual-Tuner DVR

Tivo_dt1 DVR vendor/service provider, TiVo, has finally launched a standalone dual-tuner DVR (i.e. a DVR that allows end-users to record one show while watching another, or to record two shows at once). While most of TiVo's competitors have offered dual-tuner functionality for some time now, dual-tuner TiVo DVR service has only been available to customers of the company's DirecTV with TiVo offering. Dubbed the TiVo Series2 DT DVR, the new box will be available in retail starting May 1st. According to TiVo, the DT DVR is "optimized for cable households," and incorporates built-in Ethernet and USB ports, making it easy to connect it to a home network. "We've been hearing from our subscribers that they wanted a TiVo DVR that could record two shows at once," Jim Denney, TiVo's VP of product marketing, said in a prepared statement. "With the TiVo Series2 DT DVR, we've delivered that capability to our customers at a very affordable price." The new box is available in retail (retailers that will offer the new box include Circuit City, Best Buy, and Amazon.com) in an 80-hour model, priced at $99.99, after rebate and service activation; it will also be available through TiVo's Web site, bundled with TiVo service. Other capabilities of the new box (and of other TiVo Series2 boxes) include the ability to transfer recorded programs to laptops and certain other portable devices through TiVo's TiVoToGo service; the ability to schedule recordings remotely via the Internet; and support for various broadband content services offered by TiVo. TiVo also plans to shortly launch a service that will allow customers to program their Series2 boxes remotely from certain Verizon mobile phones; and a service called TiVo KidZone that will allow parents to control their children's viewing choices.
