Television Academy's Interactive TV Emmys Expand their Focus

--Will Now Recognize Achievement in Programming for New Platforms

Emmysgoldstatue2005_6 The Interactive Media Peer Group of the Los Angeles-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is expanding the focus of its Interactive Television Emmy Awards to include programs created for new media/non-traditional-TV platforms. (Note: the Television Academy is one of two organizations behind the US television industry's annual Emmy Awards--the other is the New York-based National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Both organizations have, for some time now, given out Emmy Awards for interactive television; the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' ITV Emmys are for creative achievement while the National Television Academy's Emmys are technology-focused. The latter organization also recently announced plans for a new Emmy category that will recognize original programming created specifically for non-TV viewing platforms--see [itvt] Issue 6.41 Part 1.)

The Television Academy will now award Emmys for Outstanding Achievement in Interactive Television in two categories: 1) programming and services originally created for the TV screen ("Outstanding Achievement for Enhanced or Interactive Programming: Television"), and 2) programming and services originally created for broadband, mobile, advanced media and other on-demand platforms, including the iPod ("Outstanding Achievement for Enhanced or Interactive Programming: New Delivery Platforms"). "As audiences increasingly interact with television programming on a variety of new platforms and in innovative ways, it is important that the Television Academy foster the advancement of new media by recognizing and rewarding outstanding achievement in that arena," Marcelo Ford-Livene, the co-governor of the Interactive Media Peer Group, said in a prepared statement.

The deadline for submitting entries for this year's Television Academy Interactive TV Emmy Awards is May 31st: entries must have been commercially deployed in the US between June 1st, 2005 and May 31st, 2006. The first round of the two-part awards judging process will involve at-home viewing by members of the Interactive Media Peer Group, who will vote via an online ballot; the second round will involve a "blue ribbon panel" of professionals, who will meet and vote at the Television Academy to determine whether one, more than one, or no awards should be presented in the interactive TV category. More details on eligibility, an official call for entries, and other information can be found at www.emmys.tv/interactive. (Note: the Interactive Peer Group's Emmy Awards Committee members are co-chairs Marcia Zellers and David Jensen, Adam Bain, Patrick Donoghue, Margie Gilmore, Julie Glassman, Dale Herigstad, Brent Imai, Geoff Katz, Dan Kendall, Bob Kernen, Paul Marcum, Ty Ahmad Taylor, and Bill Via.)
