Comcast has released the results of a national survey it commissioned, which it claims shows that families with children are making frequent use of VOD and PVR, and that these services are having a "positive impact" on family viewing habits. According to the survey, frequent users of such time-shifting services watch more television as a family, have fewer conflicts about what to watch, and always find appropriate shows for their children to watch. The survey, entitled "The Role of On-Demand Services in Household Dynamics," was conducted via telephone by Horowitz Associates, using a random, national sample of Comcast cable customers with children aged 12 and under.
Among other things, the survey found that, of customers who use VOD and PVR daily or almost daily:
- 85% indicated that they "always have appropriate shows for their children to watch."
- 65% indicated that they "have fewer conflicts about what to watch on TV."
- 63% indicated that they "watch more television as a family."
- 56% believed that VOD or PVR service "helps them reduce the stress they feel from having to juggle their kids, family and personal schedules."
- 47% felt that VOD makes it "easier to negotiate with their kids about doing homework and chores without them complaining about missing their TV shows."
- 78% indicated that VOD or PVR service "frees them up from being tied to a TV schedule so they can watch shows whenever they want."
- 69% indicated that they "pick up shows without missing any of them when they get interrupted by the phone, the kids or chores they have to do."
The survey also found that families that use Comcast's VOD service daily are more likely to report that they have more control over their viewing experience than are families that use the service monthly.
In addition, the survey found that families with children are using VOD and PVR's regularly:
- 77% of frequent VOD users (defined as those who use VOD almost every day) watch children's VOD programming "almost every day."
- 48% of customers with VOD watch children's VOD "almost every day," while 72% watch on a weekly basis and 85% watch on a monthly basis.
- 48% of customers with VOD and PVR use their PVR service "almost every day" to watch children's programming they have recorded, while 67% use the service to watch children's shows on a weekly basis and 69% use a PVR to watch on a monthly basis.
