Oregan in Direct Licensing Relationship with Large European Telco

UK-based Oregan Networks, which develops W3C-compliant TV browser and media streaming software, says that it has established a direct licensing relationship with one of Europe's largest incumbent telcos (the company has not disclosed the name of the telco). According to Oregan, the telco is planning a commercial roll-out of set-top boxes equipped with its Oregan Media Browser in the first quarter of next year. The Oregan Media Browser is comprised of a TV Web browser, an IPTV client, and a Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) module. According to Oregan, the devices that will be equipped with the Media Browser will support video services, RSS news feeds, stock trading and weather information services, Internet radio, podcasts, Google-powered searches, and home media networking. The company says that the Oregan-enabled set-tops will feature a uniform user interface for Web-based and home entertainment, powered by dynamic HTML and Macromedia Flash rendering. "This is an exciting development both for Oregan and the telco market," Oregan CEO, Mark G. Perry, said in a prepared statement. "In addition to IPTV and VOD, the convergent IP set-top boxes to be deployed to the end-consumers will offer the functionalities traditionally ascribed to either consumer electronics or personal computers: Web-based services and wireless home media distribution. The Web browsing, home media streaming and IPTV modules are closely integrated, providing indisputable cost and time-to-market advantages and allowing the deployment of value-add network services within a short timescale--an important factor for the highly competitive DSL services market. Importantly, Oregan creates its software specifically for resource-constrained platforms, which means low memory consumption and a minimal footprint are absolute requirements."
